So far, it's been a solid four and a half years, and I can definitely say I have improved a lot. When learning an instrument, a musician has to take the time to practice their instrument and dedicate themselves to it. Initially in middle school, I was a bit of a slacker when it came to practicing. Practice cards (Which we used to log the amount of time we spent practicing for points) ) were easily forged, and my parents didn't really care whether I really practiced or not. At some point in 7th grade however, I just decided to start practicing. Later that week, I convinced my parents to trade in my trumpet and buy a silver one (There are sound differences between a lacquer, silver coated, and gold coated trumpets). Soon enough, I was taking private lessons and practicing almost everyday. Those two things were what made me from a mediocre player into a great one.
The path to learning an instrument is not an easy one. To truly learn how to be a musician, you have to spend time and love your passion. A small tip for new musicians: Don't be afraid. Play confidently and play out because that is the only way you will truly sound good.
